‘LEISURE
TRAVEL BY TRAIN’
Autumn 2008 -Spring 2009. Thank you for travelling with us recently, or
requesting a copy of our brochure which I am pleased to forward to you. Once
again we are offering tours by chartered and scheduled trains. Charters are
comprised of heritage stock and where tours offer ‘on train dining’
this includes meals on the train served to your Premier seat. Short breaks in
the U.K. include en-suite facilities, return rail fare, reserved seats,
breakfast or breakfast and dinner at the hotel, transfers from the station
(where necessary), plus the services of a courier. Breaks in Europe offer the same
facilities but with continental breakfast only unless shown otherwise. All our
tours are non smoking. We have not included charter trains for spring 09
as we cannot be sure of any blocks which may be caused by engineering work as
yet. Our next booklet will be available in January 2009 and will have details
of charters for April and May.
It should be mentioned that although train
times are given in the best of faith and every effort is made toadhere to
published itineraries, trains (especially charter trains) can be, and sometimes
are, subject todelay. This should be borne in mind when planning onward
journeys as liability will be not be acceptedfor any delays. (See terms and
conditions).
Once again many thanks for your support of
raffles on our charter trains. We now plan to make a donationof £400.00
to a local group in Hull which gives support to families of children with
Aspergers. The groupalso organises days out and activities for the children
which helps them to make friends and learn socialskills. Once again thank you
for your help in making this possible.
For your peace of mind I would also like you
to be aware that ‘Railtourer Ltd’ conforms with the E.C. directive
for Tour Operators. All monies received for short breaks are held in a trust
account operated by our bankers and accountants and cannot be withdrawn by
‘Railtourer Ltd’ until the tour is completed, protecting your
payment.
Continental tours -Prices are calculated at
one Euro to 80 pence. For every full 10 pence increase in the value of the Euro
at the time of making full payment we reserve the right to increase the cost of
our tours by £5.00 for each nights stay. If the value falls then for
every full ten pence fall we will reduce the cost by £5.00 for each
nights stay.
Thank
you for your interest and I hope, should you choose to travel with us, that you
have a mostenjoyable break -David Tyler -Railtourer Ltd, 42 Kingston Road,
Willerby, Hull HU10 6BH.

CHARTER TRAINS Premier Dining includes a full English breakfast and
elevenses on the outward leg and four course dinner on the return, served to
your reserved Premier seat. First and standard class seats are all at tables
with large picture windows and are in first and standard class ex inter-city
main line carriages. The carriages used on charter trains are roomy, clean and
tidy but not modern. As such they bring back the feel of rail travel from days
gone by and the trips are as much about enjoying a leisurely train ride as they
are about visiting the destination. It should be remembered that charter trains
are not considered time critical by Network Rail and can be delayed to allow
the passage of high speed trains. Our charter trains all convey a buffet or
trolley service for the purchase of light refreshments. All times shown are
very approximate. Trains are timed by Network Rail one week before departure at
which time an itinerary will be forwarded to all passengers.

VISIT ARUNDEL, BOGNOR REGIS OR BOTH Departing early morning from Doncaster approx 0615
(Peterborough approx 0740) we travel via the East Coast Main Line en route to
London. On our way through London we enjoy views across the capital, rarely
seen from main line trains, as we make our way south across the Thames through
the rolling countryside of the South Downs to Arundel and Bognor Regis (three
to four hour break). You can leave the train at either Arundel or Bognor giving
a choice of destination. Regular service trains link Bognor to Arundel so you
could even visit both but there would not be time to include the castle in your
visit to Arundel and still go on to Bognor (fare not included). Our return
route brings us through London on a different route through Acton, West
Hampstead and Harringay before rejoining the East Coast Main Line for home
stations.
If you decide to leave our train at Arundel
Station you will be just a ten minute stroll from the town and impressive
castle. The town has a lovely setting on the River Arun and the half timbered
buildings and castle walls make a lovely backdrop as you approach from the
station. The town is sited on a hill across the river and the narrow streets
host a number of antique and curio shops plus the usual pubs cafes and
restaurants. Charming as the town itself is, the main attraction has to be the
castle and it’s meandering gardens. Although I have visited Arundel
before I made my first visit to the castle in July and was extremely impressed.
In addition to the gardens the castle, which is the ancestral home of the Duke
of Norfolk, boasts a beautifully restored interior complete with armoury,
private chapel, and period rooms resplendent with paintings by Van Dyck,
Gainsborough and Canaletto. Climb up to the keep and enjoy views across the
Downs to the channel coast. In addition to all these attractions the castle
plays host to a classic car rally on the 13th September adding even more
interest to your visit.
If you wish to book for the castle and pay
Railtourer in advance we can obtain discounted entry as follows -Castle,
grounds, keep, gardens and classic cars £11.00 p.p -Keep, Grounds and
classic cars only £ 6.00 p.p.
Staying on board the train to our final
destination sees us all the way to the traditional south coast resort of Bognor
Regis. We expect to break here for a little over three hours giving plenty of
time for a walk along the promenade and lunch in one of the cafes, bars or
restaurants in the centre or on the seafront.

A new
tour which offers one night in Lille and three nights in Strasbourg, part time
seat of the European
Parliament.
Our journey starts around 0630 from Doncaster
from where we travel to London Kings Cross. From here we make the short
transfer to St Pancras for the Eurostar to Lille. We hope to depart around 1000
giving an arrival into Lille at approximately 1230. Our hotel, the Crowne
Plaza, is just across the road from the station and after check in the rest of
the day is free to explore Lille with its shops, parks and Cite De Europe
centre. Lille has a very ‘French’ feel and makes for an ideal
stopover.
On Friday (mid morning) we join our direct
service to Strasbourg where we expect to arrive early afternoon and, once
again, our hotel, The Mercure, is opposite the station, albeit a little further
at approximately 100 yards. Being the seat of the European Parliament has
brought a number of benefits to Strasbourg not the least of which is a very
modern tram system which makes travelling around the city very easy indeed. A
day ticket is just a few Euros and the lines criss cross the city. A ride out
to the Parliament buildings is worthwhile but Strasbourgs’ main
attractions lie in its historical areas. Main sights include the sandstone
Gothic Cathedral, the narrow streets and impressive squares with their timber
framed buildings, the stunning four towered medieval Ponts Couverts Bridge and
a list of museums to numerous to mention in the space available. The city also
boasts a number of parks and a botanical garden but one of the main pleasures
will be to simply stroll around and enjoy the beauty of the historical areas
particularly in the tanners district where waterside buildings make for perfect
photo opportunities. We have three nights in Strasbourg and, just in case you
should run of places to visit, we include a trip to the town of Colmar which is
around forty minutes away by train. Colmar is much smaller than Strasbourg but
has some lovely old buildings and an area known as little Venice which is very
pretty indeed. The centre is a fifteen minute walk from the station but well
worth the effort. Departure from Strasbourg will be around mid morning on the
Monday and after a break in Lille we expect to arrive back into London around
1900 and Doncaster 2200

On a recent trip to Lille I was advised to
take a look at Gent with a view to running a trip for three nights. Iwas very
surprised at what I found and pleased to have made the effort. The result of my
visit is a threenight tour staying in what is probably the best and certainly
most convenient hotel in this most attractiveand bustling city. The city centre
is criss crossed with waterways on which numerous boats offer sightseeing
trips. There are many attractive squares to enjoy as well as a complete castle
to explore. Thecity has a wonderful atmosphere and would probably offer enough
in its own right for a weekend break. However with Antwerp just a short train
ride away a day out is too much to resist so we include a trip tothis
attractive port. Antwerp central station is an attraction in its own right and
a walk from the station tothe old town and river front takes us past numerous
shops and cafe’s. The old town boasts narrow cobbledstreets and medieval
buildings and there are splendid views along the river front.
We expect to depart Doncaster for London
around 0630 on the Friday where we join the Eurostar serviceto Lille. From
Lille (for convenience) we travel by road coach to Gent (approximately one
hour) and ourfour star N.H. hotel which as mentioned earlier is in the heart of
the city. We will depart Gent early
afternoon on Monday and after a break in

from there to Wuppertal arriving around 1700-1800. Our hotel in Wuppertal is

Wuppertal mid morning aboard our I.C.E. to Hannover -a journey of around two
hours. In Hannover we transfer to a road coach for the transfer to the Hotel
Wernigerode, our base for the next four nights. The hotel is of a high standard
with restaurant, bars, fitness and sauna area and is perfectly located close to
the station and stunning centre of this attractive town. We include buffet
breakfast every day and dinner and on the first night in the cost of the tour.
We have decided not to include dinner after the first night as the hotel meals
are reasonably priced and there are so many options in the town in beautiful
surroundings that we felt it better to allow you to choose for yourselves. Over
the next few days we will take you to Quedlinberg, a stunning town consisting
of many buildings dating to the 15th century. It really is difficult to
describe the atmosphere created in such a chocolate box location. We will also
take you by steam train up the Brocken Mountain, which is almost a full day in
itself. In addition to this we will provide a three day rover pass for the
whole of the Harz narrow gauge system which will give the opportunity to tour
the area in nostalgic style. Wernigerode itself is full of history and
extremely attractive being dominated by a castle which warrants a half day

Saturday
November 22nd, Saturday December 13th 2008
Please note that there is a slight
possibility that the return journey on Saturday dates could be affected by
weekend engineering works. In view of this bookings for Saturday day trips can
only be accepted two months before departure when National Express confirm
their timetable. (However we will take bookings for Saturday on a provisional
basis, holding your place without charge until two months before departure at
which time we will ask for payment).
Payment For day tours full payment is required at the time of booking. In the
case of bookings made over the telephone seats will be held for five days in
lieu of payment by cheque. For short breaks a deposit of £45.00 per
person will secure your booking, (£65.00 for Continental tours). Full
payment is required no later than six weeks before departure (eight weeks for
continental tours) . If full payment is not received by this date Railtourer
reserve the right to cancel the booking without refund. If you cancel your
holiday The following charges apply : Period of written notice with
cancellation charge as a percentage of total holiday cost : -UK Tours 42 or
more days notice -deposit only 41-28 days -50% 28 days or less -100%.
Continental tours 56 or more days notice deposit only. 56 -46 days 60%, 45 days
or less -100%. Cancellation of a day tour more than 28 days before departure on
medical grounds and with a medical certificate incurs a charge of £20.00
per person. Cancellation within 28 days of departure -no refund. If we
cancel your holiday Although Railtourer will make every effort to operate
all our tours as advertised, Railtourer, like any operator, reserves the right
to cancel any holiday if the number of bookings is so low as to make the tour
non viable. If this situation arises Railtourer will refund all monies paid to
Railtourer by the client. If we change your holiday All our holidays are
carefully planned but arrangements are made months before departure and on
occasion, small changes may be made to your itinerary. If a major change is
made (change of hotel for example) you would be notified in writing at least 10
days before departure. Changes such as this would be rare and change of hotel
would be to at least a similar standard. In the event of strikes or any other
event beyond our control we reserve the right to substitute rail with road
transport. Responsibilities We undertake to take due care in arranging
your holiday and accept liability for any acts or omissions on the part of our
staff. However we do not exercise direct control over day to day running of
services provided by ferries, hotels, railways, etc. included in our
itineraries and all tickets are issued subject to the terms and conditions of
that operator. Furthermore, Railtourer will not accept liability or
responsibility for delays and difficulties brought about by any fault of that
operator. In the event of any cancellation or curtailment of any tour
Railtourer day trip or holiday Railtourer will not accept liability for any claim,
for whatever reason, above the fare paid for the tour which has been cancelled
or curtailed. In the event of delays Railtourer will not accept liability for
any onward travel from or to the station at which the tour was joined. We also
point out that although charter trains offer a nostalgic, relaxing trip they in
particular can be subject to delay as they are not considered ‘time
critical’ by the railway authorities. For this reason we do not make
compensation payments for late arrival/departure of charter trains. Railtourer
will not accept liability for any unrecoverable losses which may arise from
delays or cancellation brought about as a result of security alerts, strikes,
acts of terror, vandalism, severe weather conditions and events beyond our control.
For this reason you must ensure that your insurance covers you against these
eventualities. Luggage. Please bear in mind that passengers are
responsible for the conveyance of their own luggage and as such it is advisable
not to “overload” oneself and to ensure cases are easily
manageable. Missed departures. It is the passengers responsibility to
arrive in good time for all departures, on joining and during the tours. Any
extra costs incurred as a result of a passenger missing an advertised departure
will be the responsibility of the passenger and not of Railtourer. Changing
trains. Most tours involve itineraries which involve changing from one
train to another. Whilst instructions will be given by our courier and help
offered where possible passengers are responsible for making their way from one
train to the other. Most stations have lifts or escalators but this is not
always the case. Any passenger who has any concerns regarding their ability to
accomplish changes of train should enquire at the time of booking. Lost
tickets. On tours where passengers are issued with travel tickets
Railtourer will not accept liability for any loss of those tickets. Some rail
companies will not issue duplicate tickets, others charge a replacement fee. In
either case any charge will be borne by the passenger and not by Railtourer. Complaints
We hope you will enjoy your tour but should you have cause to complain you
should bring the problem to the attention of your courier on the tour. If the
problem is not resolved then please put your complaint in writing to our office
no later than ten days after the completion of the tour. Insurance cover. We
strongly advise that you purchase travel insurance when booking a UK holiday.
We will only accept a booking for a continental tour on the understanding that
travel insurance is obtained before departure. We have found that amongst many
others the Post Office is very competitive, though the choice of insurer is
your own. You must ensure that you are covered against risks as detailed in
responsibilities above.
